3 Things I Learned From Pausing Cube Rules
3 things I learned from pausing This is not your ordinary career site. I help the corporate worker who toils away in the company cubicle make career transitions. You want to do your job well, following all the rules -- .The career transitions where I can help you center on three critical career areas: How to land a job, succeed in a job, and build employment security.Top 10 Posts on CategoriesMost people would not have noticed because they were looking somewhere in the past where a thousand articles have been published, but since May, 2017, I officially paused .For a lot of reasons, I needed to back away. was becoming more of a burden, I didnât know if I was making a difference with the site, and, to be fair, the site was not producing any income. And, if you read marketing gurus, I had no interest in building a big audience only to then start fulfilling whatever objectives I have for the site.So I paused. I needed to in order to gain perspective. To figure out if what I was writ ing really made a difference. In between normal life, my family also took a week-long trip to Paris. Trudging 45-miles in shoes, seeing some of the great art of our times, and living a lot of the cafe life was renewing. I didnât think specifically or my day job, but it was a useful exercise in just clearing out the cobwebs.Figuring out what was important. The first question I had to ask myself: Did the content and products I was producing really have the potential to make a difference in people making transitions in corporate? You need to understand, I follow about 70 career sites. I see their content every day. 90% of their content is completely different than mine.Stuff about how management can, essentially, make their cubicle dwellers feel better about their company or something close to it.Fashion in the office (there is more than one career site ârankedâ in awards that focuses on thisâ¦).Or career sites that talk about how you can create a business (when the site is about careers, not about building businessesâ¦).I, seriously, look at those sites and just wonder how they are helping people land jobs, have job success or build any type of employment security. The honest answer is: they are not.And where the 10% overlaps on my subjects, the stuff looks like it has been written by people who have never really worked in a cubicle, dealing with Corporate politics, policies, and trying to figure out how to survive and thrive in a place where you compete with everyone on the planet for your job.Certainly, not all of my content is awesome. But a whole lot of it deals with real issues in corporate life. A whole lot of it directly addresses what people face in cubicles every day. And, since I work in one of those cubicles in my day job, I have a certain point of view. Living the dream, so to speak, gives you a unique point of viewâ¦I did an interview yesterday â" one that was about the career expert side of and not job interviews that I do for my day job â" that asked a lot of good questions (like, what have you learned about work over the course of your career?).When I go back over the past years of work on this site to try and answer that question, the thing that stood out of me the most was like, âDamn, you have really written some very good stuff here!âSo the answer to the first question â" yes, the content and products I have here have a huge potential to make a difference. The second question was: What is the best way to serve people who hope to become Cubicle Warriors? The way I currently present and sell my products clearly is not the answer. This is something that can be improved upon. While the content on the site is, IMHO, very good, the actual products need to improve. Not necessarily with the content (though that can be better), but the approach needs to be different.Instead of âhere is your download,â the better approach would be to build classes on my various subjects allowing users to break subjects up into smaller chunks, increase the variety of methods of providing the information, and making the content better over time while still giving those who started out full access to all of the improved content for their reference.I donât have all this worked out yet, there are a few things I need to change on the site and how stuff is presented, but I know what I want to present and have the tools ready to create the classes. Obviously, more on this later. The third question is: are you, Scot, motivated enough to do this?Itâs a valid question. Maintaining a web site, producing content, creating classes, managing clients â" all that takes a serious commitment. Is it worth it? After all, this is the question that produced the pause here in the first place. And after a lot of time, the answer to this question is yes. There are two reasons for the answer to be yes.The first reason is this: there is a great need for this work because, frankly, people are really horrible at doing career trans itions. Itâs because it is a job skill that isnât used much. But, seriously. Iâve been fortunate to be a âhiring managerâ in that I do the screening interviews for candidates for openings in my department for my day job. If you didnât make it past me, you never got the opportunity to do a second interview with the panel that really does the hiring.I was the âgateâ you had to pass once you got past the HR screening interview. And even though our HR group is pretty good at screening candidates, I have to tell you: these interviews were just absolutely awful. And I didnât pass on many candidates. The validation to all of that was that if you made it past me, the panel unanimously agreed with my interview results and you got a job offer. Now, given the market (oh, soooo much better than 2009!), not everyone accepted the job offer. But they got one to evaluate. The deal about all of this isnât about what a great interviewer I am or whatever. The big deal about this is: th ere is such a small threshold for job candidates to overcome to get to the next interview because the competition is just horrible.Thatâs not going to be the case all the time â" but most of the time, if you know how to do a job interview right, you can move on in the process. And get a job offer. How can that be ignored? The second reason is this: I enjoy helping people. Sometimes it is very frustrating in that people ask for advice â" and then donât follow it.But it is sooo satisfying to have someone want to change, take the advice and get results.A small example are the people that I have helped with their resume who, after months of no interviews, now get multiple interviews simply because they change their resume to match up with what I recommend. You are talking peopleâs livelihood here â" making a difference in their ability to provide for their family, their self-worth, and be able to live a life without the big corporate axe hanging over their heads.Being able to h elp someone get the interview, get the job offer, be successful on the job is just so satisfying.Obviously, this isnât going to be the viral post bringing in thousands of readers. It is much more of an accountability post so I can put my thoughts out there and figure out the path forward. So this will take a bit. I have the outline for multiple classes â" but one miracle at a time. The content I produce Iâm happy with, so that will continue. The web site changes will happen over time. But after wandering for a while, the answer is: I still have stories to tell. I can help people. You still deserve to be a Cubicle Warrior. And I intend to help you get there. This is not your ordinary career site. I help the corporate worker who toils away in the company cubicle make career transitions. You want to do your job well, following all the rules â" .The career transitions where I can help you center on three critical career areas: How to land a job, succeed in a job, and build employmen t security. policiesThe content on this website is my opinion and will probably not reflect the views of my various employers.Apple, the Apple logo, iPad, Apple Watch and iPhone are trademarks of Apple Inc., registered in the U.S. and other countries. View networking as a research process to overcome reluctance
View networking as a research process to overcome reluctance [social_warfare]While experts may debate the exact percentage, almost everybody has heard by now that the majority of professional jobs today are filled not through published advertisements, but via personal networking. Not only do employers value the extra credibility involved when hiring through word-of-mouth referrals, but they also appreciate the lower recruitment cost and greater likelihood an individual will fit well with their organizational culture. Despite this reality, however, many job seekers continue to be uncomfortable with the networking process and asking other people for help, favors, and introductions. For some, the challenge centers around how to ask for assistance in the right way or to characterize their situation without seeming desperate. For others, the reluctance to network comes down to pride and a feeling they should be able to get a job based on their credentials alone, without relying on relationships. So the question arisesâ"what can networking-averse job seekers do to get over this hurdle and gain access to the two-thirds of all opportunities that will be filled through personal referrals? To answer this question, I reached out to Career Horizons, a Seattle-based career coaching and outplacement firm. As a self-described âborn-again networker,â Matt has spent more than 20 years studying the process of looking for work and helping people learn to busuggestions for overcoming internal resistance to networkingild â" and leverage â" a powerful web of relationships around themselves in order to enhance their career success. Mattâs ? âFor starters,â he says, âitâs important to recognize that asking for help is a sign of strength in todayâs world, not weakness. Few individuals have the resources to reach their goals completely on their own without assistance from a network of advocates. So if youâre still clinging to the notion that you need to be a ârugged individualistâ of some sort, itâs time to embrace the new paradigm and realize that most successful people didnât get there completely on their own, despite appearances or perceptions to the contrary.â Consider these three key ways to overcome networking reluctance: 1. View networking as a research process, not a selling process While many people view networking in a negative light, perceiving it as a âschmoozingâ or âsellingâ activity of some kind, Matt doesnât believe this is the caseâ"and a simple reframing of the concept can work wonders. âWhile introverts like me often feel uncomfortable directly promoting ourselves, we enjoy conducting research and seeking out answers to questions. So if you can structure your job search efforts as a research project rather than a selling activity, youâll have more success,â he said. For example, you can reach out to people to learn about their industry, get advice on your resume, or ask them their opinion regarding various companies of interest. Place the focus on gathering data and soliciting advice from appropriate people, not on overtly selling yourself as a job candidate. 2. Recognize that most people enjoy doing favors for others If you still feel youâre imposing on people by asking them for help with your search, you might actually have things backwards. âBelieve it or not,â Matt says, âThereâs an old adage in psychology called The Ben Franklin Effect that suggests that the people granting people favors, rather than receiving them, are actually getting the better end of the deal. Amazingly, people like Ben Franklin were studying these exact same concepts over 200 years ago â" and came to the conclusion that individuals reluctant to ask others for favors were, in some respects, selfishly denying others the chance to feel good about themselves.â 3. When all else fails, practice the golden rule Lastly, Matt suggests that if you feel uncomfortable networking with others as part of your job search, contemplate the process through the lens of the good-old-fashioned golden rule. Ask yourself how youâd feel if somebody asked for a similar favor in return. Would you lend a helping hand to a friend or acquaintance, if asked? If so, what types of requests would be appropriate and which might go too far and cross the line? âWhen you look at the process in reverse,â Matt said, âyouâll often realize how much help youâve given to other people over the years â" and gain a better appreciation for what works, what doesnât, and what boundaries likely shouldnât be crossed.â At the end of the day, thereâs no question that networking can be a tricky process to master for folks who are inherently shy or for those who have always had success landing jobs through their credentials alone. But as Matt and other experts advise, those professionals who conquer their lingering fears, resistance, and confusion around networking are going to be in the best position to secure long-term career success.

Sleep vacations are becoming the new travel trend
Rest get-aways are turning into the new travel pattern Rest excursions are turning into the new travel pattern Americans don't get enough rest. This is a reality. Also, in any event, when we do get rest it isn't normally high caliber because of our failure to never be almost a blue-lit screen. Furthermore, this is beginning to cost us.Earlier this year we detailed on fatigued laborers costing businesses about $1,200 to $3,100 per representative in declining work execution every year and tired specialists costing employers $136 billion a year in wellbeing related, lost productivity. So the arrangement is take a break to make up for lost time with your rest, correct? In any case, the vast majority need to really do things when they are on an extended get-away like travel or work on different tasks or a large number of us simply wind up working a fraction of the time anyway. But imagine a scenario where you explicitly got away only for resting. As per Well Good, a few inns are presently offering rest bundles like New York City's The Benjamin.Would you pay for good sleep?Though it appears to be to some degree nonsensical to go to probably the busiest city on the planet to rest, only the depiction of the bundle was balmy. Working with sleep medication advisor Rebecca Robbins, PhD, The Benjamin will make sleep time a fantasy materialize (do winged creatures come and dress you when you at long last wake up?) The bundle incorporates triple sheet windows, power outage draperies, unbiased tones for quieting purposes, earplugs, a cushion menu, and on-request meditation. The Westin likewise has a Sleep Well package at a considerable lot of its areas which notwithstanding a magnificent bed incorporates a spa credit, late checkout and a feasting credit for the lodging's Rest soundly menu (which we expect incorporates a whole Thanksgiving turkey.)At the Premier Inn, they will really give you your cash back in the event that you don't get quality rest, as per Bustle. So you may really wind up dozing through your next excursion yet that may not be a terrible thing at these inns.

I spent six months in a Lebanese refugee camp. (The Story Behind a Resume)
I went through a half year in a Lebanese exile camp. (The Story Behind a Resume) I went through a half year in a Lebanese exile camp. (The Story Behind a Resume) Recollect how we presented to you an anecdote about a previous associate of our own whos building up a vaginal test in China? No? Don't worry about it. Look at it later. Anyway, heres another meeting! This time with another previous associate. Her name is Zuzana and she went through a half year working with Syrian displaced people in Lebanon. As you can envision, her activity was out of this world troublesome. Then again, it wasnt all fate and agony. What's more, that is the thing that this meeting is about. Its about the snapshots of expectation, chuckling, and fellowship that can be found even in the most unstable of conditions. Furthermore, wellness classes. Its additionally about wellness classes. However, regardless of the light tone of this meeting, dont think we trifle with this point. Media frequently dehumanize these individuals and allude to them essentially as outcasts. We needed to show an alternate, increasingly human side of their story. In any case, normally, this blog isnt about human rights, wars, or compassionate activity. Its about helping you secure your fantasy position. Zuzanas story could assist you with doing that. Zuzana will let you know: What its like to fill in as a volunteer in an exile camp; Step by step instructions to give wellness classes to Syrian ladies; How moving to Despacito can propel kids to remain calm during the class; Why volunteer experience is an absolute necessity on a CV; What abilities are required for that; Why its moronic to feel that you recognize what you will accomplish for a mind-blowing remainder; To say the very least. Who is Zuzana ProstrednÃkov? (Exile Camp Volunteer Resume Sample) You went through a half year in a displaced person camp in Lebanon. What do evacuees do there consistently, aside from training? Most exiles in my haven have just been there for around seven years. Therefore, a significant number of them have occupations. Lamentably, they can just work unlawfully, so they get abused. Ladies work in the fields. Men work either in the fields or in development. Childrens work is additionally a long way from unprecedented. They sell organic products, vegetables, napkins or gum. You can see them in the road selling when they should, truth be told, be at school. Lamentably, numerous families rely upon their pay. Being stuck in the camp throughout the day must be disappointing. Is it true that they are as yet ready to have a ton of fun in such a troublesome circumstance? Gracious no doubt, completely. Without a doubt, its a troublesome circumstance and numerous individuals experience the ill effects of gloom, however its imperative to comprehend the camp has (shockingly and reluctantly) become their home. Theyve been there for a long time at this point. Thus, theyre not simply attempting to discover exercises to burn through that time away. They live there. Along these lines, numerous evacuee camps become a town inside a town. They do what any other individual would ordinarily do. They deal with youngsters, visit one another, sit in front of the TV, or tune in to music. Some of them have a family living outside the safe house, so they go visit them as well. Then again, I ought to likewise say its an undesirable domain. Living there can harm ones physical and emotional well-being. Therefore, psychosocial support is likewise a crucial piece of compassionate work. Indeed, even basic things, similar to volunteers playing football with the individuals living in these conditions, can help them a great deal. Along these lines, yes obviously they can have a great time and we had a ton of fun together during the exercises we did in the inside. For instance, at wellness classes for ladies. You were instructing wellness classes to Syrian ladies? Disclose to me more! Gracious yes. At the point when I began showing it, I let myself know poo, I dont realize how to do that. The classes consistently occurred inside on the grounds that in this network, ladies are not permitted to be seen without their hijab. Be that as it may, when they were inside with all entryways and windows shut, they removed their hijabs andWell, lets simply state they let themselves be more themselves At that point they revealed to me they dont like the music and needed to play Arabic music. So we did and they all began moving. All volunteers were attempting to move as well however they just chuckled at us. Evidently, we didnt realize how to move - they needed to tell us the best way to do it. Fundamentally, they showed us how to move our butts. It was extremely amusing. Ive read about a French displaced person camp where volunteers sorted out style shows or workmanship classes for the outcasts. Did you have something comparative? We had workmanship classes for little youngsters, yet that was a piece of the training program. Be that as it may, I think it comes down to contrasts between singular camps. A few camps are transitional and individuals just remain there for a shorter time. Then again, in the sanctuary where I worked, individuals have been living there for a couple of years as of now. Thus, the instruction community gave openings like professional preparing to enable these individuals to secure positions even in Lebanon. I recollect how upbeat we were when men went to the English class after working throughout the day. That was a major achievement. Theyre typical individuals accomplishing their work and we were simply supporting them by giving instruction. That is it. I think about camps where individuals are obliged as far as possible, dont have any occupations. Numerous evacuee camps in Europe are that way. In any case, in Lebanon, the displaced people are not looking for haven. They simply need to return home at the earliest opportunity. Those are two totally different situations. What's more, shouldn't something be said about kids? You know, kids consistently should be children and they have to play. What they as a rule do in their spare time there? A great deal of insane crap . Ive never worked with that numerous kids throughout my life, yet I think its safe to state these were the most inventive children Ill ever meet. A great deal of them have never gone to class, which is the reason they had no feeling of control. That was perhaps the greatest test when the middle initially opened. The instructors who opened the inside needed to instruct them that consistently the class begins at a specific time and they have to come there around then. Additionally, they needed to disclose why they have to remain situated in the class and can't flee. Yet at the same time, if the kids saw something fascinating out of the window, they would simply bounce outside and run there. Scarred by the injury they have suffered in life up until now, and the absence of trust to other people, they would regularly carry blades to the class. I think to some it gave a suspicion that all is well and good and self-defense. And they normally created those blades themselves as well. They would locate a sharp object and go from that point. Creative. Be that as it may, after about a year, it showed signs of improvement. They quit carrying blades to the class and wouldnt even play with them any longer. That was a tremendous improvement. Presently they go through their days uniquely in contrast to by lighting fires or looking through whip to discover toys. Has it at any point happened that a youngster would stand up in the center of a class and needed to leave? Frequently. I cherished that most of them werent timid by any means. They were exceptionally inquisitive and needed to master every little thing about you and could get amped up for little things. Yet additionally, in the event that you exhausted them, they would cause frenzy and go around. I adored we had a great deal of fun moving and singing. To rouse them, I let them know whether they worked discreetly during the class, marry play Despacito throughout the previous five minutes of the class. Furthermore, it worked! I trust my partners won't read this, they would presumably execute me But I let them remain on the work area while we moved and hosted a gathering. Gracious and recall how the ladies advised me to shake my butt while moving? I had a kindergarten understudy who moved that way We hosted the best gatherings. I adored that since I dont recall being permitted to move in my school. SB Overseas It seems like they truly love to move. Completely. There was a great deal of moving. Ive never moved such a great amount in as long as I can remember like during those a half year. At the point when I used to go to class, it was totally different. On a transport, we needed to remain situated. No holding up. No shouting. No music - possibly only quietly out of sight or in earphones. In Lebanon, it was actually the inverse. Once, we took a three-hour ride to the mountains in winter in light of the fact that huge numbers of the youngsters had never observed snow. From the second we boarded until the second we got off, it was all moving and noisy music. Everybody was on their feet. We were singing, shouting, moving and the transport driver was the DJ. It was so much fun. I was having a great time. Amazing, that is truly cool! Also, you were doing this for three hours? Three hours there and three hours back . Additionally, when we arrived, they began an immense snow battle! Be that as it may, at that point, following, we connected an enormous speaker and moved there also. That nearly seems like a lot of good times for an exile camp Was there a great second that remains as a cherished memory to you? All things considered, better believe it, however it wasnt actually that entertaining. Anybody perusing this will most likely think Im bizarre to think it was a decent memory. Be that as it may Sometime in the past the inside was continually being overwhelmed with water in light of terrible pipes. So we dropped the top of the line each morning to siphon the crap water out and clean the spot. At exactly that point we could open the school. Different things turned out to be very ordinary to me, I presume. Be that as it may, a large portion of my preferred recollections are connected to the wellness classes. You know, spending time with other ladies. They would continually bring us food before the class, so we had something to eat and afterward did some activity. All things considered, it didnt work out that well without fail in any case What is the most significant thing you have gained from this chipping in understanding? Adaptability. On the off chance that you work under conditions that are out of your range, you should be adaptable and keep your eyes open to the earth around you. Youre not there to do your own venture, yet to serve others and work in a group. Therefore, your passing needs change constantly. You should be constantly arranged to do anything so as to support the circumstance. On the off chance that the structure gets overflowed with sewage water, you need to deal with it. Now and then you additionally need to modify the objectives of the whole venture,

5 Ways to Find Jobs in Israel Before Arriving
5 Ways to Find Jobs in Israel Before Arriving 149 If you're considering a move to Israel, you're likely asking yourself the same questions that Bari did in a recent email: Photo Credit: Victor Bayon I am planning to move back to Israel this summer (most likely in August). When should I start seriously looking for a job? Is it unrealistic to have a job in place before I arrive? These 2 questions are slightly different but very much related. Let's look at them in reverse order. But first- Keep in mind these 2 points You will almost always want to physically meet the key people with whom you're going to be in close contact at work i.e. your boss and colleagues. Budget for at least one trip to Israel to meet them and sign the contract. The higher your level of Hebrew is when you begin your job search, the higher your chances of finding work in Israel quickly. This is true regardless of whether you begin your Israeli job search in Israel or halfway around the world. On to the questionsâ¦eval Is it possible to find a job before moving to Israel? If your profession requires a license to practice in Israel â" e.g dentistry or medicine â" forget a job search from abroad. You should focus instead on getting the conversion exams done as quickly as possible after arriving, perhaps by beginning your studies at home first. For most other people it's also unrealistic. Israeli companies will simply not be willing to take the chance on someone they can't see in their office during the next week or two. For all they know, you may decide not to come, or to postpone and then where would they be?eval However, there a few cases where it is possible: You get lucky â" the company you're targeting is having trouble hiring locally. To compromise, they're willing to wait a reasonable amount of time until you arrive. In Israel, this is not as unusual as in other countries because so many companies work on the international level and may have trouble finding people who know the necessary languages and culture. This is where researching your target companies can pay off. Internal transfer from your current multinational employer â" for example, if you work for Google in California or Zurich, you can try to be relocated to Google Israel. Freelancing for an Israeli company â" using a website like Xplace you can begin working for an Israeli company today. You'll start learning about the Israeli sector of your industry right away and make contacts that can help you transition into a full-time, salary-paying job later. Aliya organizations' placement programs â" in France in 2005, the Jewish Agency was pushing an employment program aimed at bringing people to Haifa and the northern regions of Israel. The program promised to help you find work in your field with employers who were willing to wait up to 6 months for you to begin in their offices. Contact your country's aliya organizations for information about similar initiatives. Your moving date is soon â" which leads nicely into the next question: When Should You Start Your Job Search Before Moving to Israel? Coming from far?
